What exactly contributed to its unparalleled charm and popularity during that time? In this episode, we aim to unravel the mysterious allure behind it. Join us as we delve into the past and present of Old Mine Cut diamonds!

Old Mine Cut diamonds originated in the early 18th century, evolving from the Peruzzi cut. They gained popularity from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, coinciding with the prosperous and affluent Georgian and Victorian eras in British history. The rapid economic growth brought by the Industrial Revolution led to an unprecedented pursuit of luxury and decoration. Old Mine Cut diamonds became the preferred choice for craftsmen creating diamond jewelry for the royal family and nobility.

During those years, various terms were used to describe this cutting style: Miners Cut, Mine Cut, Old Miner Cut, and Old Miners Cut. The common thread among these names is the word 'Mine.' Why is that?

There are two explanations for this. One explanation takes a geographical perspective. At that time, diamonds were primarily mined from mines in Brazil and India, and people named the cut based on its origin. Later, in the late 19th century, with the impact of the discovery and mining of new diamond mines in South Africa, coupled with the gradual decrease in mining of old mines, people gradually began to refer to diamond mines in Brazil and India as ‘Old Mine’. The other explanation suggests that Old Mine Cut refers to the way craftsmen at the time used limited tools, techniques, and knowledge to cut and polish diamonds.

To better understand the origin of this claim, we need to further explore the scenarios in which diamond cutters worked, the tools they used, and the methods they employed to polish diamonds during that time. The answer will be revealed in the next article. Stay tuned!

Candlelit encounters and the fascinating history of Old Mine Cut diamonds intertwine in an era of romance and poetry. Join us as we continue to unravel the mysteries and unique charm behind these jewels from the past.
